It’s not new for the people that follow our work how much we love good extractions and Hashish. And of course, made without the use of any solvents. There are many techniques to obtain a good hash, DIY techniques to the most technological. You can make Ice water hash with coffee filters at the same time that companies work hard to develop machines that wash kilos and kilos of material at once.
Contrary to what many people think, some ways are easier than you think, and the results can boost that flower joint like nothing else. What a great adventure and nice activity to be able to make Hashish or other concentrates safely at home.
Hashish is nothing more than the cannabis trichomes separated mechanically from a plant, most of the times pressed together to make a brick. The trichomes are the richest part of cannabis in plant, they are filled with the cannabinoids.

What is hashish
As we mentioned in the introduction, hashish is the concentrate of trichome heads, separated/ extracted directly from the plant. There are many types – from the most artisanal, such as charas, to the most complex, such as hash rosin, flower rosin, and full melt ice water hash which melts completely in the banger. There are many different ways to make hash. But don’t worry, you don’t need to have that much gear to be able to venture into the world of extractions.
An important announcement about hashish is: the material that comes in (and with good hands in the extraction technique) is what comes out. This means that if you make hash from a bad material, like almost no trichomes, or plants full of mold and bugs, you will not get the best result. Or even try to hash with immature plants, in which the trichomes are not even 100% formed – this will definitely not work.
One of the main goals about hash making is to separate tricome heads with the least contaminants possible. A good indicator that your hash is good is the color – it can range from brown, gold, red, and even white and also, depending on the hash, the way it burns or melts.A greener hash means there are a lot of contaminants (plant material in your hash)

One of the most traditional ways of extracting the hash is also one of the simplest, and we love the result. Charas are still made this way in India and Nepal, in a way that requires practically no instruments other than your hands and the cannabis plants. However, it is a time-consuming process that produces small yields. So, if you plan to hash like this, get ready for a hard day’s work.
You will need:
- Non-dried cannabis buds. Don’t use trimmed cannabis!
- Very clean hands – you don’t want germs in your hash.
Step by Step
First step: before you start, clean your hands VERY WELL. For the most organic results possible, use non-residual, non-perfumed soap to wash your hands – like glycerin.
Second step: take a cannabis bud in your hand and remove the leaves or stems. (a lot of people still do it with their plants still alive!)
Third step: place the bud between the two palms and start to roll gently, in a circular motion. Do not apply too much pressure, or you can contaminate your hash with plant matter.
Fourth step: you will start to see a thick resin forming inside your hands and fingers. This is essentially hash – the charas. Scrape this hash on a clean surface and press it to create a small block or ball. Repeat with as many buds as you need!
Ask yourself if it is worthwhile to make charas with your plant, after all, the yield is very low. In India, charas are made in the middle of an abundance of plants on the mountain.
Want to know a curiosity? It was through the hash that they discovered that cannabis was a psychoactive plant. While harvesting hemp seeds, workers licked their hands and got high, and so they discovered its effects – eating charas hashish, which is still done today.

2. Kief
You may have already had contact with the kief without even noticing: it is nothing more than cannabis in a very fine powder, as if it had been sifted through an ordinary kitchen sieve. This is the biggest difference between it and dry sift: the kief is not as pure as the dry one, as it can also bring plant material along with the pieces of trichomes.
You will need:
- Pieces of cannabis;
- A three-phase dichavador.
Step by Step
First step: pass the pieces of cannabis through the three-phase dichavador.
Second step: collect the powder to pass to your dichavador’s compartment – this is your kief! Join by pressure and heat.
3. Rosin: the hash made with your flat iron
This is the easiest way to make dabbable concentrate at home! Rosin, or flower rosin, is very easy to make the ideal is a flat iron that you can control the temperature, but, if you don’t have it, you can do it with the normal one – being very careful not to burn yourself or burn your material.
You will need:
- Vegetal paper;
- Cannabis flower;
- Flat iron.
Step by Step
First step: separate the flowers into small portions of approximately one centimeter.
Second step: cut the parchment paper into small pieces about 8x16cm, and fold them in half.
Third step: on a piece of paper, insert a bud, and with the hot plate, press for approximately five seconds.
Fourth step: when you open the paper, you will see a few golden drops of resin around the crushed bud under pressure. Take the resin with tweezers and store. With each flower, it is possible to repeat the same operation several times.
4. Dry Sift: sifting
Also a very popular and easy way to extract hash, the dry sift (which literally means to sift dry), is very traditional, and widely used in Morocco – one of the largest and oldest hash producers in the world. In this method, you must pass the trimmed cannabis through a kind of fine sieve in order to remove its trichomes.
For best results, try freezing your cannabis in a ziplock bag overnight – this can facilitate the separation of trichomes from plant material.
You will need:
- Trimmed cannabis
- Very fine sieve
- Parchment paper
- A card is just not worth using your credit card and stick a lot of resin on it
Step by Step
First step: place a sheet of parchment paper on a clean surface, such as on the kitchen table. The sheet of paper should be slightly larger than your sieve.
Second step: place your sieve, which can only be a fabric with fine holes, above the piece of parchment paper. Then place the cannabis into large pieces.
Third step: use your hands to gently move the cannabis across the thin piece of tissue, to help separate the trichomes from the plant material. You should see a small amount of “dust” forming on the parchment paper under the canvas.
Fourth step: continue passing the cannabis through this fine sieve until you have approximately 10 or 20% of the final product. For example, if you used 100g of cannabis, you should create about 10g of hash.
Fifth step: when you’re done sifting cannabis, it’s time to collect your hash and press it. We recommend using a credit card to form a good stack on the sheet of parchment paper, pressing it to form a notepad.
5. Ice (Bubble Hash): with coffee filter? That’s right!
You can make a kind of bubble hash (known as ice, or ice-o-lator) with some utensils – and coffee filter! Yes, with a little filter it is possible to make caffeinated AND cannabis delights! Is that the best option? No, after all the trichome heads are not separated in different microns. But, it is a nice way to start making experiences at home!
You will need:
- Trimmed cannabis
- Ice water
- One container
- A simple sieve
- A coffee filter
- An extra large glass bottle
Step by Step
First step: put your material in a glass container with water and ice. Shake for approximately 3 minutes.
Second step: Leave the glass jar to rest for 15/20 minutes and remove the vegetable matter left over.
Third step: you should see a small amount of sediment at the bottom of the jar. This is essentially the hah
Fourth step: pour approximately 2/3 of the water into the bottle. Make sure to pour it slowly to avoid losing the hash at the bottom.
Fifth step: fill the jar to the top with more ice water and let the mixture rest for another 3 minutes. When the mixture is settled, repeat steps 4 and 5 again before moving on to step 7. This will help separate as much plant material from your hash as possible.
Sixth step: drain as much water from your bottle as possible without losing the hash. Then strain the remaining mixture through the coffee filter and squeeze gently to remove excess water.
Seventh step: the resulting wet and cold mass is the hash. Now, all you have to do is dry it and enjoy it. Nham!
Need to dry the hash?
This more humid hash, like the last one we showed, needs to go through a drying process – well, you don’t want this delight to create mold, do you?
There are some very easy ways to dry. Leaving on an absorbent surface, in an environment with low humidity and plenty of running air, is ideal. But you can learn a lot more about drying and hash storage here in our full post!
Our tips
- You can vaporize your hash! It is the safest way to use and does not damage your lungs.
- Be careful with the dose. As we mentioned, a concentrate can have up to 90% THC. That’s a cannabinoid bomb! So, go with the calm that Jah asks not to end up in a night.
- You may have noticed that we didn’t bring any methods with alcohol or BHO (butane gas). This is because, although they are easily found there on the internet, we do not think it is safe to recommend that these extractions be done at home. First, because these materials are highly flammable and explosive. And secondly, if it is not purged properly, this solvent will do a lot of damage to your health! (This is also Harm Reduction, not only a matter of safe consumption, but the procedure to make the hash too!)
- The quality may be lower, yes – this is because these are rudimentary techniques, which can be done even by those who do not have so much access to special material. We know that, in the prohibitionist context, it is not so simple to become a hash maker, but that does not mean that you cannot or should not venture!
