Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny (2006)
Genre: Comedy
A story of love, adventure and magic: this Jack Black film is a pearl in American cinema. In the feature, JB meets KG and the duo starts the band Tenacious D. Then, the two go in search of a legendary item – a guitar pick that grants not only the greatest skills to those who carry it, but also musical immortality.
This is one of those movies that will make you laugh until you cry! Especially with Dios special appearance.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)
Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Drama
Johnny Depp is the star of this big screen version of Hunter S. Thompson’s psychedelic classic about his trip through West America. On this very crazy journey, he, a journalist looking for a story, and his Samoan lawyer desperately look for the “American dream”. The duo received a special little help – through the huge amount of drugs and alcohol stored in their convertible, The Red Shark.
If you have seen this one sober, it is worth viewing it again while stoned!
My Octopus Teacher (2020)
Genre: Documentary
Filmmaker Craig Foster shows a very incredible story: how he, years after swimming in the seas of South Africa, became friends with an octopus. After months of making frequent visits and monitoring the creature’s movements, Foster finally gains his trust and shows how the friendship between a human being and an animal can be pure and full of love.
Just talking about this documentary makes you respect nature so much more. Is crazy how animals can be very creative beings – and octopuses are quite amazing with that.
Fantasia 2000 (1999)
Genre: Animation, Comedy
One of the Disney classics, this film brings our favorite childhood characters and a lot of classical music all together. The 1999 version is a remasterization – the original was actually released in 1940 (!). From Beethoven’s fifth symphony to Pomp and Circumstance: the feature is a crazy mix of scenes and music that will play with your senses and yield a remarkable journey.
Pineapple Express (2008)
Genre: Comedy
This is one of those movies made by stoners to, well, other stoners! A man and his drug dealer run away from murderers and a corrupt police officer after he witnesses his drug dealer boss murdering a competitor while trying to deliver papers against him. It’s a story full of twists and turns and shows how that cannabis paranoia can get us – even more so by smoking a Pineapple Express.
Seth Rogen can’t get it wrong. In fact, he was the one who taught me to roll up the best joints I’ve ever done in my life. The man is wise!
Up in Smoke (1978)
Genre: Comedy
Cheech and Chong happen to meet on a highway somewhere in California. They go in search of drugs and are accidentally deported to Mexico, where, in their desperation to return home, they agree to drive a van back to the United States so that they can return in time for a show they are going to play. Without knowing the properties with which the van was built, they return after giving a ride to two women, always avoiding police officers who do not even know they are following them.
This is another one of those classics for the high. Cheech and Chong are part of the cannabis culture and have been a reference for many people in this universe!
Alice in Wonderland (1951)
Genre: Animation, Adventure
Disney’s adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s hit book is wonderful! It tells the story of Alice, a young dreamer who loves to live within her imagination. One day, while reading a book in the field, she spots a large white rabbit dressed in a jacket and carrying a large watch. He runs off, saying he is late for a very important meeting. She follows him through the forest. He then disappears into a rabbit hole. Alice follows him, and finds all kinds of discoveries, characters and adventures.
The whole film looks like an acid trip, and it’s even interesting to reflect about the kind of things children used to watch in the old days. Too good!
